On the Continent it's a cute culotte In America it's what you got But in Blighty hot is a lovely pot of tea With our stiff upper lips and ironic smiles With our ruling arses on their stately piles In this sceptred isle and its square miles and miles of sea In this climate you learn Hearts don't really burn Your boy scout is prepared to take plan B Play may be delayed You've got to shower proof your parade And you might as well stay indoors and watch on TV Who said the British were free? Well the southern soul really struts and frets With its raging bulls and castanets But the Pom never gets upset so easily Though his blood will rise for an Elgar tune Those satanic mills are just Mills and Boon And the moon in June is clouded in mystery In this climate you learn To wait for your turn Manners maketh you mind your queue and pee Ooh but the weather Brings all kinds of people together At least we can moan passionately How can you relax in your wellies and your mac? How can you not be cynical when your boys are in Iraq? And when the sun comes out you know the rain will soon come back In this climate you learn Hearts don't really burn It's a figure of speech in a tongue full of poetry And this land made the NHS and The Beatles the BBC Shakespeare, Blake, Jane Austen, Basil Fawlty and Dad's Army Might not have it made But it's how fairly you played And we'll make hay in the rain if needs must be Though we know it's in vain Cos we're history

Annie Waites is going on some dates Cos Annie wants a baby now Her body can't wait she's left it rather late But Annie wants a kid somehow Glass girl Annie was the first born sister The one who never married her mister The only man who ever properly kissed her Annie Waites is looking for a mate Cos Annie wants a baby fast She never learnt to play, her sibs got in the way But Annie wants a kid at last Cheer up Annie a smile wouldn't break you Oh somebody's gonna take you You never know but a kiss might wake you The Glass Girl really knows her stuff First Class girl could never work hard enough To win her Daddy's love Cheer up Annie a smile wouldn't break you Or somebody might make you Gotta forgive the one who would forsake you The Glass Girl is hard and cold The First Class girl always did as she was told Oh Annie if you wanna be a mum You'd better start by loving someone There's a girl so close to you You could give a little, give a little I know about the cards you were dealt I know they never let you show how you felt But fire is hot and glass will melt

Be born in a free country To folks who'll pay the price In peace and in plenty That's HTMLN Steer clear of diseases And accident and vice Smile when he teases That's HTMLN Eat, drink and be quartered Where there's good clean air to breathe Keep your garden watered And never be bereaved You must try not to worry Though lightning may strike twice Weave it into the story That's HTMLN We're all going somewhere Nobody knows what's true It isn't all down or up To me or to you Let's share it before we're through
